PORTRAITS | AT HOME WITH THE ARTIST - ENLIGHTENMENT BARBIE
A long long time ago, before I got serious about photography, I did a shoot with this lovely creature where I was on the other side of the camera. She photographed me when I was in my early twenties, we played dress up in Golden Gate Park and those photos still capture a part of my life that I am forever grateful to have documented. Since then, Gillian has evolved into a talented mixed media artist. Her work is vibrantly psychedelic and divinely feminine and steeped in symbolism and super-saturated colors. While we had not stayed in contact, I had followed her work over the years via Instagram and admired her bold sartorial choices, so, on a recent trip to the Bay Area, I reached out to her to see if she would be interested in letting me return the favor she’d done for me all those years ago.
To my delight and surprise, she remembered me and had some free time and graciously agreed to let me come over and photograph her in her beautiful home in San Francisco’s Mission District. Much like her art, her home is full of beautiful things to look at. From the lush jungle of plants in her living room to the welter of color and texture in her wardrobe, her space is basically a photographers dream and after much time ooh-ing and aah-ing over her gorgeous closet, we picked out a couple of items and got to snapping.
Can you beleive homegirl has a cold in these photos?? In spite of a runny nose, she absolutely slayed this session and I can’t express how excited I was to get home and edit these! The final images didn’t dissipoint and I’m so happy to be sharing them here.
